20 Mil vs 22 Mil Wear Layer: Does the Difference Actually Matter?

If you've shopped luxury vinyl plank for more than an afternoon, someone has quoted you a wear-layer number. It's the spec the industry leads with, and for good reason — it's the single best predictor of how a floor will look in ten years. It's also the spec most often used to upsell you.
So let's answer the question directly: between a 20-mil and a 22-mil wear layer, the practical difference in a home is negligible. The meaningful gap is much further down the range, and it's the one most retail flooring never mentions. Here's how to read the number properly.
What a wear layer actually is
The wear layer is the clear, tough film on top of the plank. It sits above the printed layer that gives the floor its wood look, and it is the only thing standing between that print and your life — dog nails, chair legs, grit tracked in from the driveway, a dropped cast-iron pan.
It is not the total thickness of the plank. This trips people up constantly. Our plank is 5.5mm thick overall, but the wear layer inside it is 20 mil. Two completely different measurements of two different things, and a salesperson quoting you "5.5mm" when you asked about the wear layer is either confused or hoping you are.
A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. So 20 mil is 0.020" — about the thickness of five sheets of printer paper. That sounds impossibly thin to carry a floor for twenty years, and yet it does, because it's a hard urethane-coated film, not a coat of paint.
- Wear layer — the clear protective film on top. Measured in mils. This is the durability spec.
- Overall thickness — the whole plank, core included. Measured in millimetres. This is a rigidity and feel spec.
- Core — what's underneath. Ours is SPC (stone polymer composite), which is what makes the plank dimensionally stable.
Where the real cliff is: 6–12 mil vs 20 mil
Here's the part the wear-layer conversation usually skips. Most vinyl plank sold into homes runs a 6 to 12 mil wear layer. That's the builder-grade plank in a spec house, and it's most of what you'll find at a big-box store at an attractive price per square foot.
A 20-mil wear layer is a commercial specification. It's what gets put down in retail stores and offices, where the floor takes a thousand pairs of shoes a day and the owner can't afford to redo it in five years.
That's the jump that matters — roughly doubling to tripling the protective film. Going from 12 mil to 20 mil is a different class of floor. Going from 20 mil to 22 mil is a 10% increase on a spec that's already past the point where household traffic is the limiting factor. Neither of those floors is going to wear through in your living room.
This is worth being blunt about, because we sell a 20-mil floor and it would be easy to argue the other direction if we sold a 22. If someone is charging you a meaningful premium for those two mils in a residential setting, ask them what problem it solves. There usually isn't one.
So when does 22 mil actually earn its keep?
There are real cases. They're just narrower than the marketing implies:
In a genuinely punishing commercial setting — a busy restaurant entry, a gym floor, a retail aisle with cart traffic — every mil of headroom counts, and the incremental cost is trivial against the cost of closing to re-floor. If you're specifying for that, take the thicker layer.
In a home, the failure mode almost never looks like "the wear layer wore through." It looks like a deep gouge from something dragged across it, a plank damaged in one spot, or a floor that got tired of being cleaned with the wrong product. None of those are solved by two more mils.
- Heavy commercial traffic — genuine wear-through risk; more is better.
- Rolling loads — carts, office chairs on hard casters, pallet jacks.
- Residential — 20 mil is already past the threshold; the extra 2 mil is insurance you'll never claim.
The specs that matter more than those two mils
If you're comparing two floors and one is 20 mil and the other is 22, you're looking at the wrong line on the spec sheet. Here's what actually separates a floor that ages well from one that doesn't:
The core. An SPC (stone polymer composite) core is dense and dimensionally stable — it doesn't expand and contract much with temperature swings, and it bridges minor subfloor imperfections instead of telegraphing them. A softer or hollower core will show every ridge underneath and can dent from a point load even with a thick wear layer on top.
Surface treatment. Wear layers aren't all the same material. A ceramic-bead or urethane-reinforced surface resists scuffing differently than a bare vinyl film of the same thickness. Two 20-mil floors can behave quite differently.
Embossing and finish. A low-sheen, textured surface hides micro-scratches that a glossy floor advertises. This is why a cheap glossy floor looks worse at year two than a matte floor with the same wear layer.
The warranty, and what voids it. A long warranty number means little if the exclusions swallow it. Read what's actually covered.
How to ask about this without getting sold
Three questions will tell you more than an hour in a showroom:
Ask for the wear layer in mils, separately from the plank thickness in millimetres. If you get one number, you asked the wrong person or they gave you the wrong answer on purpose.
Ask what the core is — SPC, WPC, or flexible LVT. These are meaningfully different products that all get called "vinyl plank."
Ask to see the spec sheet. Not a brochure — the actual sheet. Any supplier who can't produce one for the product they're quoting is telling you something.

+ Can a wear layer be refinished or repaired if it's damaged?
No — unlike hardwood, LVP can't be sanded and refinished. But you don't need to. Because it's installed as individual planks, a damaged board can be replaced on its own without touching the rest of the floor, which is faster and cheaper than refinishing a whole room.
+ Does a thicker wear layer make the floor quieter or warmer?
Not meaningfully. Acoustics and underfoot warmth come from the core and any attached underlayment, not the wear layer. If quiet matters — a condo, an upstairs room — ask about the attached pad and the floor's sound ratings instead.
